Class 1 & Class 3: Commercial Licenses

Class 1 License (Heavy Truck)

Allows you to drive commercial trucks >11,700 lbs, including dump trucks and concrete mixers.

Required for: Truck driving jobs, haul truck operations

Test: Written (road rules) + Air brake (systems) + Pre-trip (inspection) + Road test

Class 3 License (Class A)

Allows you to drive large buses and some equipment transporters.

Required for: Some equipment moving, specialized transport

Air Brake Test (Class 1)

50 questions on air brake systems, components, operation, and emergency procedures.

Required knowledge:

Pre-Trip Inspection (Class 1)

Walk-around inspection of truck: tires, lights, brakes, fluids, connections.

Scoring: Deductions for missed items. Must achieve ~80% to pass.

Cost & Timeline

Class 1: $500-800, takes 2-4 weeks (driver training + testing)

Alberta requirement: Minimum 3 months experience with Class 4 (regular) license first
