WorkSafe: Regulations & Compliance
What is WorkSafe (Alberta)?
WorkSafeBC (BC), WorkSafeAB (Alberta), etc. are provincial agencies that enforce health & safety regulations. Employers and operators must comply.
Key Regulations (Alberta)
- Trenching (>4ft): Shoring required. Competent person supervision.
- Tip-over protection: ROPS (roll-over protective structure) on all dozers/excavators.
- Fall protection: Hard hats, safety vests for all workers.
- Utilities: Dig-Safe locates mandatory before ANY digging.
- Equipment inspection: Daily pre-trips for all heavy equipment.
- Operator qualifications: Some machines require certification (pipelayers, cranes).
Incident Reporting
Required if: Injury (any), property damage >$2,500, near-miss with high potential.
Timeline: Report within 24 hours to WorkSafe. Employer must investigate.
Do NOT blame operator. Focus on system failures (equipment, procedure, training).
Operator Responsibilities
- Know safety rules for your equipment
- Report hazards/unsafe conditions
- Use required PPE (hard hat, safety vest)
- Participate in JSA/FHIA meetings
- Report incidents/near-misses promptly
- Refuse unsafe work (you have the right)
