Trenching: Safe Digging Operations

What is Trenching?

Trenching is digging narrow, deep channels for utilities (water, sewer, gas, electrical, fiber). Most dangerous earthwork activity. Trenches >4ft deep require shoring (safety law).

Common Hazards

Trenching Best Practices

  1. Call Dig-Safe (locate all utilities before digging)
  2. Assess soil type and water table
  3. Install appropriate shoring for depth (if >4ft, use shoring)
  4. Use trench box (easiest, safest for utility work)
  5. Have entry/exit ladders or ramps
  6. No spoil pile within 2ft of trench edge (adds weight, can collapse)
  7. Daily inspection by competent person
